Lima City of Kings

a is the capital city of Peru, situated at the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Lima today has a population of aprox. 10 million Inhabitants, this is basically one third of the entire Peruvian population, also it was founded by the conqueror Francisco Pizarro in January 1535, known as the “ City of the Kings”.

Lima was also in colonial times the capital of the Viceroyship of Peru, the most largest and important Viceroyship in America.

The city centre has today very important architectonic monuments, vestiges of the Colonial apogee, such as the Major Square or Main Square, The Government Palace, The City Hall, The Cathedral, the Torre Tagle Palace, the Osambela Palace, the San Francisco Church, the Church of La Merced, the La Alameda de los Descalzos, the Paseo de Aguas, etc.

Cusco and Machu Picchu

Cusco is considered as the Archaeological Capital of America, and the most ancient inhabited city within the continent. Situated at 3250 m.a.s.l, it was the capital of the great Inca Empire.

Iis massive stone constructions which date back to Inca times, give form and colour to the narrow streets, at the same time we can appreciate colonial buildings on Inca wall foundations. In Cusco there are various types of coexisting architectures, ruins, temples and houses, which give testimony of its great past and history. All street signs in Cusco are both in Spanish and in Quechua language (a tradition which the people in Cusco cultivate as a beautiful heritage).

Most Pre-Inca and Inca ruins can be found outside the city of Cusco, being the Temple of Coricancha one of the few, which can be found within Cusco city. The nearest ruins are known as Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay. Machu Picchu is located in the nearby of the Urubamba River Valley aprox. 120 Km. From Cusco at 2400 m.a.s.l. in the midst of an exuberant amount of vegetation. It is without any doubt the main tourist attraction of Peru and because of its spectacular architecture it is considered the eighth world wonder.

Machu Picchu was built by the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century and discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. Aguas Calientes is the nearest town to Machu Picchu (4 Km.), and is visited by travellers who wish to observe the beauty of nature. The beauty of the landscape, flora and fauna are indescribable, being also able to enjoy the thermal waters of the area.

Puno Folkloric Capital

Puno is located southeast of Lima, on the shores of the Titicaca Lake, at 3,820 m.a.s.l, cradle of the Tiahuanaco culture, which developed on the plateau of the Collao.

According to the Inca legend, from the dark waters of the Titicaca Lake (most highest navigable lake in the world) emerged Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo to establish the Inca Empire. Puno is made up of colonial houses, archaeological vestiges and some ancestral ethnic groups which give accounts of its importance of ancient Peru, such as temples, Chulpas de Sillustani and the community of the Uros, who live on floating islands made up from Totoras.

Due to the existing commerce within the region, most of the travellers with destination to Cusco or Bolivia usually overnight in this beautiful city, also known as the ¨Folkloric Capital of Peru¨, being also the highest city most people have had the opportunity to visit. Temperatures have great variations from day to night. You can also take excursions on the Titicaca Lake, Uros Islands and Taquile amongst others.

Ica Paracas and Nazca Lines

The Peruvian coast is an extensive fringe of arid land with a sprinkle of fertile valleys, dunes and oasis making it an attractive sight to visit. The principal attraction points (Situated south of Lima) are the cities known as Pisco, The bay of Paracas and its isles (Ballestas, within others), Ica and the city of Nazca due to its famous and mysterious lines.

This area is also at the same time considered to be a very important archaeological centre due to the reason that this is where the Paracas culture developed (1300 bc). The National Reserve of Paracas and its Ballestas Islands constitute the largest wild life sanctuary along the Peruvian coast, home for many birds, fishes and diverse marine species such as seals, penguins and sea lions, are a very important factor for the ecological balance for the area and its flora and fauna.

The river that bares the same name of the city, which is also considered to be the Pisco and Wine capital of Peru, irrigates the city of Ica. In the immense desert extension of Nazca we are surprised and attracted by their famous aqueducts, centre of the Nazca culture (500 bc till 700 ad) and its enigmatic lines including figures which date back more than 1500 years, all of which were preserved and studied by Dr. Maria Reiche.

Iquitos Amazon Capital

Iquitos is the most largest and populated city in the Peruvian jungle. Situated on the shores of the Amazonas, Nanay and Itaya Rivers, in the province of Maynas of the department of Loreto.

Iquitos was founded in 1750 by a Jesuit mission. Then came the rubber boom within the 19th century. In one of the corners of the main square you will find the famous house made out of iron and designed by Eiffel himself.

The excursions in the jungle can be divided in two kinds: Visit the jungle lodges that demand some walking into the jungle and campsites. Hike like this can take anything starting from 45 minutes up to 4 hours, with comfortable equipments and good food, guided visits to the villages and Indian tribes of the area, where it will be possible to observe the variety of flora and fauna. The other one is having trips on boats along the Amazon jungle river exploring deep inside.
